Sustainable aquaculture production

AQUADEVBUS Project
AQUADEVBUS is an innovative project focused on transforming aquaculture education, research, skills development, and industry engagement in Kenya and the wider East African region. The project responds to the growing importance of aquaculture in promoting food and nutrition security, employment creation, income generation, environmental sustainability, and economic development.
The project brings together higher education institutions, aquaculture industry actors, researchers, students, policymakers, and other stakeholders to strengthen the capacity of universities and training institutions to deliver relevant, practical, and industry-oriented aquaculture education. Through curriculum enhancement, modern teaching and learning approaches, practical training, field exposure, research, innovation, and collaboration with industry, AQUADEVBUS seeks to equip graduates with the knowledge, technical competencies, entrepreneurial skills, and practical experience required to contribute effectively to the rapidly evolving aquaculture sector.
A key feature of AQUADEVBUS is its emphasis on experiential and practice-based learning. Students and staff are exposed to commercial aquaculture farms, production systems, technologies, value-chain activities, and real-world industry challenges. These engagements help bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice while creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and collaboration between academia and industry.
The project also promotes digital innovation and sustainable aquaculture practices, encouraging the adoption of appropriate technologies and approaches that improve productivity, resource efficiency, environmental management, and the resilience of aquaculture enterprises. By strengthening research and innovation capacity, AQUADEVBUS provides a platform for developing locally relevant solutions to challenges affecting aquaculture production and education.
Beyond education and research, AQUADEVBUS places strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement, partnerships, and knowledge dissemination. The project creates opportunities for universities, industry, government agencies, development partners, investors, and communities to work together in advancing the aquaculture sector. Through conferences, exhibitions, field visits, workshops, industry engagements, and other collaborative activities, the project contributes to raising the visibility and investment potential of aquaculture.
Ultimately, AQUADEVBUS aims to establish a sustainable and future-ready model of aquaculture education and industry collaboration. By connecting knowledge, skills, research, technology, and enterprise, the project contributes to the development of a competent aquaculture workforce and a more productive, innovative, and sustainable aquaculture sector in Kenya and the East African region.
